Imagine you are planning your wedding.

You set the date for the wedding. You figure out what you are going to wear, you arrange a caterer and plan the menu, you design the cake, get a photographer, etc. You have spent many hours on planning so that everything will be just as you imagined on your wedding day.

You imagine how happy you will be at your wedding and how beautiful it be. When that wedding day finally arrives, it is beautiful.

But, no matter how much work went into that wedding, no matter how much was spent, if you didn’t spend anytime really figuring out if you were marrying the right person, or consider what married life would be like, that beautiful wedding does nothing to help you have a good marriage.

So it is with weight loss.

You can set a goal weight. You get a trainer, meal plan, buy clothes you can wear when you finally lose the weight. You work your plan diligently — putting many hours of exercise and work into losing the weight so you will look just as you imagined when you lose the weight.

You imagine how happy you will be at goal, and how awesome you will look. If you are able to reach that goal, you are excited to have achieved it, and you look great.

But, no matter how much you put into losing the weight, if you didn’t spend anytime really figuring out if the person you had become in process (the life you created) was who you wanted to be in the long run, or consider what post weight loss life would be like, then having reached goal does nothing to help you have maintain a life of health and the weight you want to maintain.

As well as you may now have created a life that was about losing weight, and the rewards of losing weight. What happens when the weight has been lost? Is it a wonder that many people regain when they have treated their weight loss like planning for a wedding with no thought to the marriage or the partner?

The solution is to only do what we think we are willing to continue doing for the long run. If we want sustainable weight loss, we need to think and plan sustainably.
